Bert and Ernie are indeed a queer couple, 'Sesame Street' writer claims
Iconic "Sesame Street" puppets Bert and Ernie are a couple, according to a former writer for the show.
In an exclusive interview with with blog "Queerty," Label Saltzman said he felt that when he was writing Bert and Ernie, he was writing them as a couple and basing their interactions on his own experiences.
"I always felt that without a massive agenda, when I was writing Bert and Ernie, they were," Saltzman told Queerty. "I didn’t have any other way to contextualize them. The other thing was, more than one person referred to Arnie and I as 'Bert and Ernie.'"
However, Sesame Workshop, which produces the production, denies the pair are together, saying they have no sexual orientation but are best friends.
“As we have always said, Bert and Ernie are top friends. They were created to educate preschoolers that people can be nice friends with those who are very different from themselves. Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Mup
'Sesame Street' writer walks support his statement about Bert and Ernie being gay
Twitter erupted Sunday when a former "Sesame Street" author seemed to confirm that iconic characters Bert and Ernie are gay. Days later, following internet jubilation and immediate denial by Sesame Workshop, the same scribe is clarifying his words.
"As a writer, you just bring what you perceive into your work," Trail Saltzman told the Fresh York Times in a follow-up interview. "Somehow, in the uproar, that turned into Bert and Ernie being gay. There is a difference."
There has been heavy speculation over the puppets' relationship status ever since "Sesame Street" debuted in So what exactly is Bert and Ernie's relationship?
"They are two guys who love each other," Saltzman continued. "That's who they are."
In the first interview that made headlines, Saltzman told Queerty that, "when I was writing Bert & Ernie, they were [gay]."
"I didn't have any other way to contextualize them," he explained, pointing out that his control relationship with his husband was similar to the "Sesame St
Sesame Workshop says Bert and Ernie are 'best friends' and not gay
The organisation behind Sesame Highway has denied co-habiting duo, Bert and Ernie, are gay, following comments by one of the show's writers.
Mark Saltzman said his writing about the room-mating couple was based on his relationship with production editor Arnold Glassman.
Sesame Workshop then issued a utterance saying the pair "do not have a sexual orientation".
Bert and Ernie may look human, but the pair "remain puppets", it said.
"They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves."
It broadly repeats past statements the non-profit organisation has made about the stripy-clothed duo when questions arose about their relationship.

Are Bert and Ernie a homosexual couple?
It has been speculated for years that Bert and Ernie — the famous male puppets from the children's TV program Sesame Street — might be more than just roommates.
Mark Saltzman, a staff writer on the program between and , revived the debate through an interview with web magazine Queerty published on Sunday, in which he said that he had based the pair's dynamic on his own long-term relationship with the late film editor Arnold Glassman.
"I remember one time that a column from The San Francisco Chronicle, a preschooler in the city turned to mom and asked, 'are Bert and Ernie lovers?' And that, coming from a preschooler was fun," Saltzman said. "I always felt that without a huge agenda, when I was writing Bert and Ernie, they were. I didn't have any other way to contextualize them."
"I don't think I'd know how else to write them, but as a loving couple," he added.
Just 'best friends'
The show's movie company, however, denied Saltzman's comments on Tuesday.
