Mount Gay distillery Barbados - The world's oldest commercial rum company! Matchmaking app back to at least (potentially - although the mark and marketing team are probably hoping that's not proven). This household label needs no introduction.
I've provided a couple of paragraphs on the fascinating history of the distillery, especially where it seemed pertinent to the tasting. I highly praise further reading but there's little gesture me re-covering land that has been impressively researched and documented many times before. They were the last to dwell on the distillery grounds before the company was sold to Rémy Cointreau in Despite selling off the trademark Mount Gay to Rémy in , the Ward family continued to possess the distillery and the means of production, up until when, under financial strain, the entire distillery was also sold to Remy Cointreau.

It’s tough keeping up with Mount Gay’s special releases, which hold been bottled under labels including XO, Origin Series, Master Select, and more. The most recent series is known as The Master Blender Collection, and the expression reviewed here is technically release #2 in that lineup, obeying Mount Gay XO Rum – The Peat Smoke Expression, which oddly didn’t say “Master Blender Collection” on the bottle.

Well, let’s place the naming confusion aside and look at this release, a true rarity that will see only 4, bottles available globally and 1, available in the U.S.

Established in in Barbados, Mount Gay is the oldest commercial rum distillery in the world.
The newest MG release comes from Trudiann Branker, their new Master Blender who took over from Allen Smith earlier this year. What makes this rum special is the truth that is pure pot still rum, not blended with any column component. Pot still rum releases from Barbados are quite rare as most of the bottlings are often a blend of pot and column, light and heavy, in order to deliver a good even out between fruity and creamy.
Mount Gay also released the Origin Series The Copper Stills, a pack with two ml bottles a column still rum and a pot still rum in order to showcase both styles and allow you to play and generate your own blend. You can read about that here.
Mount Gay Pot Still is molasses based, distilled in in a double retort pot still and aged for 10 years in ex-Bourbon casks. For the last 6 months the rum was placed in first fill ex-Bourbon casks and then was bottled at a humble 48% ABV with only bottles available worldwide. Free of any additions but water. L

From our distillery’s inception in until the early s when a full copper Coffey column was introduced, Mount Gay was a rum made purely in pot stills.
Limited to 4, bottles, the result is a beautiful rum reminiscent of the past. Golden amber in the glass with notes of butterscotch, toffee, mocha and plum waft through the air when nosing the liquid. On the palate, the liquid is initially spicy, followed up by rich, dried fruits, dark chocolate, and oak.
