James Garner always seemed to me to be a little different from all other actors. Of course, each player brings his own unique skills and sensibilities to the nature of cinema, but Garner always stood out a little from the rest. His characters as he played them always seemed to be not only deeper than was written but also more colorful and interesting than any others with whom he shared the screen, yet he managed this without ever organism flashy. He played heroes who didn’t fit the standard heroic mold, often wearing a dark hat in a sea of bland, white hat heroes (in the picture above, featuring the leads of Warner Bros. western shows, Garner’s Maverick is the one who looks so unlike from the rest), and he could bring drama to a comedy or humor to a drama. With a career spanning 50 years of movies and television, he left us plenty of memorable roles, but there are several that will always stand out for me.

James Garner is an American film and television actor whose career has spanned more than five decades. He has starred in more than fifty movies and in several television series such as Maverick and The Rockford Files He was one of the first Hollywood actors to stand out in both media.
In I was booked on a session in Studio 2 to record a couple of titles with Gigi Garner.
Being a massive fan of her father, I thought I might get the opportunity to request her a several questions about him.
After a couple of days, I was thrilled when her father arrived to see how the session was going. He looked every bit the film star with a voice that reverberated around the room.
He was in the UK filming Victor Victoria, a fresh movie he was starring in with Julie Andrews. Henry Mancini, who had written the melody for the movie, was coincidently next-door in studio one recording the score for the film, with John Richards, the studios foremost film recording engineer.

Re the post claiming Rockford was belligerent on the put of Rockford files, Stuart Margolin who actually worked with him would challenge. Also the studio was putting tremendous pressure on Garner, cancelled the demonstrate when his doctor ordered rest, and was sued by Garner, charging Universal with "breach of contract; failure to deal in good faith and fairly; and fraud and deceit"
Stuart Margolin (who played Angel Martin in The Rockford Files) said that despite Garner's health problems in the later years of The Rockford Files, he would often work extended shifts, unusual for a starring actor, staying to do off-camera lines with other actors, doing his own stunts despite his knee problems.[57] When Garner later made The Rockford Files television movies, he said that 22 people (with the exception of series co-star Beery, who died late in ) came out of retirement to participate.

James Garner as Maverick.
When I was a kid my big brother loved the TV Western Maverick. It’s been running on a cable channel and I’ve enjoyed catching up with it. The series introduced the American audience to James Garner as Bret Maverick (who often common adventures with his brother Bart, played by Jack Kelly).
Garner became an instant star, and it’s not hard to see why. He was masculine without being obnoxious; handsome but not too pretty; charming but not cloying. Most of all he was a natural, relaxed star (though he put in a lot of complicated work to get that way!)
Which all led to a storied career. He created not one, but two, iconic television characters—Maverick and Jim Rockford. He transitioned easily to movies, and was at dwelling in light comedy (The Thrill of it All; Victor/Victoria), action adventure (The Great Escape; Hour of the Gun), romance (Murphy’s Romance), and showed considerable dramatic chops in the experimental Mister Buddwing.
By all accounts, he was as decent a fellow as there was in Hollywood.
