Our friend Joko from Java tells us what lgbtq+ life in Indonesia is like and the practical realities of the Indonesian LGBTQ community.

“OMG you two: careful you don’t receive caned for being gay!”

A rather extreme reaction by some of our friends when we told them we were going to Indonesia, but one we understand.

On the one hand, when it comes to LGBTQ rights in Indonesia, there are none. The government heavily panders to religious extremists and in the ultra-conservative province of Aceh, homosexuality is punishable with up to public lashes with a rattan cane, which also applies to foreigners!

Let's not forget the awful new law introduced in December that bans unmarried couples from sleeping together.

Yet, on the other hand, this is (officially!) a secular country with no anti-gay laws in place (outside of places like Aceh), it has the right to adjust legal gender (with judicial approval) and don't overlook, this is the residence to one of the LGBTQ hotspots in Asia: Bali!

That's right, this petty island in Southeast Indonesia is not on

Indonesia: Police must release 75 people arrested in discriminatory raid on “gay party”

Responding to the arrest of 75 people in a raid on a gathering described by police as a “gay party” in the Indonesian city of Bogor, near the capital city of Jakarta, Amnesty International Indonesia’s Deputy Director Wirya Adiwena said:

“This discriminatory raid on a privately rented villa is a blatant violation of human rights and privacy that exemplifies the hostile environment for LGBTI people in Indonesia. This gathering violated no law and posed no threat.

“The Indonesian authorities must end these hate-based and humiliating raids. No one should be subjected to arrest, intimidation or public shaming because of their actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity.

“The police must immediately release all those arrested. Indonesia’s government must also take urgent steps to ensure accountability for human rights violations committed by the police, and labor toward creating an environment where LGBTI individuals and their allies can dwell free from fear and harassment.”
