BACKGROUND

Of the three leading Lutheran organizations operating in the United States, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is considered the most welcoming and inclusive of LGBTQ+ members. Formed in with the merger of three smaller Lutheran organizations, the ELCA is based in Chicago and encompasses nearly 10, congregations and more than million members across the country.

Churchwide Assemblies are held every three years, with elected representatives establishing policy and addressing the concerns of the larger church body. As stated on the denomination’s web site, the Churchwide Assembly “provides a time and place for growth and change while remaining rooted in Scripture, tradition, Lutheran confessions and the rich histories of our congregations and communities.”

Same-Gender Issues Among Lutherans in Canada

Recent years have brought separation and discord among Lutheran Christians around the world as various church bodies have departed from historic Biblical instruction and practice by approving same-gender relationships, both within their churches&#; membership and even in the ranks of the ordained clergy. This disruption will now spread in our country through the decision of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) to authorize its pastors to deeds same-gender marriages, as well as by its finding that sexual orientation is no longer an issue in certifying candidates for the ministry.

Because these decisions will be covered in the media, members of the larger Christian group and the Canadian public in general may mistakenly conclude that these decisions represent the position of all Lutherans in this ground.  CHICAGO (ELCA) – The Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), offered a pastoral letter June 30 to the million members of the denomination in response to the recent Supreme Court ruling that queer couples may now exercise the right to marry. Last week the U.S. Supreme Court rendered its decision announcing the right of same-gender couples to have same access to marriage. For many members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, this judgment is a welcome sign of hope and a time for celebration. Other members of this church do not agree with the court's decision and linger deeply concerned because of their understanding of Scripture.

Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod affirms traditional stance on LGBT issues, compassion for LGBT people

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod overwhelmingly passed a resolution reaffirming its traditional, biblical stance on gender identity and sexual orientation, while also calling for churches to “minister compassionately” to people who identify as LGBT.

At the LCMS’ 67th Regular Convention in Tampa, Florida, on Tuesday, Resolution A, titled “To Encourage Synod to Develop Resources to Aid Congregations and Schools regarding Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Issues,” passed with % of the vote.

Among its points, the resolution reaffirmed “the biblical truth that God created humanity as male and female” and commended people who “continue to reside chaste and decent lives in repentant faith” in spite of “same-sex attraction and gender identity confusion.”
